If Birchbox does ONE thing really well, I think they’re awesome for their selection of lip products. I’ve gotten a pretty good selection of products from them (eyeliner, mascara, moisturizer) and there were lots of hits and misses. However, I’ve loved everything to do with lips!
Here are my top 3 favorites, from top to bottom:
1. Tarte Natural Lip Stain Pencil with LipSurgence in Joy (peach) – Full Size
2. theBalm Stainiac in Beauty Queen (bright berry red) – Sample
3. Stila Lip Glaze in Action (CN) – Full Size
Tarte’s lipstain has become my everyday lip product. It’s so simple to use and I swear it’s going to last FOREVER. Yay for full-size products! This lipstain is basically a big lip crayon and it glides on really smooth. My favorite part about it is that its extremely moisturizing (better than chapstick!) and even though it’s sheer, I can layer it on for the right amount of color. It also stays on for a LONG time (that’s at least six hours for me). I’m not sure if I would buy it in this peach color again–it borders on coral. I think I’d aim for something pink.
theBalm’s Stainiac was in one of my EARLY Birchboxes–this sample is on its last legs but the two of us definitely had a pretty good run. This product isn’t moisturizing, so I had to layer it with a balm, but it’s perfect when you need a really quick ‘n easy pop of color on your lips. This stain is in a gel form that you just smear on. It can double as a cheek stain too but I didn’t really like using this on my face. Also, I could only rate the staying power as okay. I absolutely loved the color, though. It was bright without being too in-your-face I loved it!
This lip glaze by Stila has a clicking mechanism (like the KATE mascara I reviewed) which I liked once I got the hang of it. This way, you don’t have to stick the brush back into the tube and you can twist out every last bit of product in there. Speaking of the brush–it’s like a paint brush! I hands down prefer this “pen” style to the traditional “wand” lip gloss in a tube style. The product kind of….oozes out from the middle and then you paint it on your lips. The only thing about this particular sample was the color–I wasn’t too in love with it at first. It’s shimmery (!) which reminds of High School…and prom. It’s growing on me though, as long as I make sure I don’t apply it too thickly. I would definitely buy this product again, just in a different color!

And there you have it! Here’s a swatch on the inside of my wrist. For reference, I’m Filipino and the inside of my wrist is a light Tan.
Have an awesome week! 🙂
