November 2013 Conscious Box – 2nd Birthday Edition

I can’t say no to “healthy” box subscriptions. Maybe it’s my conscious trying to turn a new leaf because I half-assed my New Years Resolution? (That’s probably it).

But anyway, I signed up for my first Conscious Box. ¬†It’s normally $20 a month but they had a promo to get your first box for $5. ¬†(Actually THAT’S probably why)

image image

Very interesting packaging!  I felt like I got mail from Whole Foods and as soon as I opened the box, I almost felt like I was instantly transported to their healthy living section.  You know, where they sell all the supplements and eco-friendly toilet paper?  (Haha)

But anyway, this box was Conscious Box’s Happy 2nd Birthday Box and they definitely pulled out all of the stops for this one. ¬†I was extremely surprised to see that the box was PACKED.

image

Here are the edible items:
– TeeChia Super Seeds Cereal – Cran Apple
– Plum Organics Grammy Sammy
– Yaff Bar
– Swiss Villa Raw Milk Cow Cheese – Herbes de Provence

image

Yes, you read that correctly. ¬†That Yaff bar is both human and canine friendly! ¬†That’s rather cute–if you go hiking with your dog, you can even share your snack. ¬†I tried it—it was kind of bland (but not bad), but I guess that’s the pay off so that you can safely share with Fido. ¬†The Grammy Sammy was alright (but kid friendly), I did not care for the TeeChia cereal at all, and I haven’t had the courage to try the cheese yet.

Here are the vitamins/supplements:
– MRM Digest-all
– Mega Food Vegan Daily Dietary Supplement
– Global Health Trax ThreeLac Probiotic
– Smarty Pants – Weight Management Complete Vitamins
– Maty’s All Natural Cough Syrup

image

And here are the “destresser/detox” items.
– Mighty Leaf Organics Tea (3 bags)
– DetoxRx Cell-U-Firm Body Gel
– Rebootizer Destress Detox
– Sunology Natural Sunscreen (eh, not really detox but having protected skin is not…stressful? ¬†sorry, I tried)

image

I also got a lot of cards with promo codes on other eco-friendly products.

Overall, ¬†I’m pleased but…my overall Conscious Box experience was just okay. ¬†I wasn’t blown away with the edible items but I really did appreciate the variety and sheer volume of products. ¬†At first,¬†¬†I was hoping that the majority of the items would be food, but because it was a mega-wide selection box, it makes me focus less on snacking and more on things like trying new (non-food) things, taking deep breaths, getting good nutrition, etc. ¬†At the end of the day, I guess I really did feel more…balanced.

The other thing is that I didn’t care for the review system. ¬†You can leave reviews for points, like how Birchbox does it, but with Conscious Box, you don’t have any choice but to you use full name. ¬†Maybe I’m mistaken?

PS: If you need a gluten-free or vegan box, Conscious Box also does special versions of that as well.  Aww, so thoughtful~

Review: Physicians Formula Eye Booster 2-in-1 Eyeliner + Serum

I am a HUGE fan of Kat Von D’s tattoo liner.¬†I was introduced to it last year’s Sephora Draw the Line Eyeliner Sampler and I absolutely LOVE it.¬† I’d say the only cons (for me) are that I’d prefer something a little thicker, since I also use it to darken my lash line, and that it retails for $20.¬† Since it’s the holiday season and I’m feeling the wedding cost crunch, I’ve had a sudden urge to save money anywhere I can.¬† There’s got to be a just-as-good drugstore (cheaper)¬†version for everyday usage, right?¬† I was at my local Long’s (Drugstore, like a CVS) and I bought this eyeliner because it seemed really interesting.

Brand: Physicians Formula
Product: Eye Booster 2-in-1 Lash Boosting Felt-Tip Eyeliner + Serum
Color: Ultra Black (7579)
Features: Long-wearing, water-resistant, smudge-resistant
Cost (at Longs/CVS Hawaii): $10.99, bought for $8.00 on sale

This eyeliner is interesting because it’s not just a liner—there’s a “lash-boosting” serum in the formula as well.¬† The box claims that, “100% of women saw improved and more dense-looking¬†lashes after 1 week.”¬† 100%, eh?¬† We’ll see!¬† I think my lashes are pretty short so I can get all the help that I can get.¬† *sigh*

But anyway,¬†on to my review.¬†¬†It feels just like a crayola marker, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.¬†¬†The¬†pen is easy to hold and easy to maneuver, which¬†I totally appreciate¬†so¬†I can make precise lines.¬† It has an interesting smell though, like a real marker!¬† It’s not unpleasant but it did throw me off the first time I used it.¬†

The tip is WONDERFUL.¬† It’s not too hard and it’s not too soft.¬† I can tilt it to the side to easily¬†darken my lash line and use the pointy end¬†to line the top.¬† Even though it’s a “bold” felt-tip, I found that it was really easy to make a super thin line.

The color that I picked up is Ultra Black.¬† It goes on dark (but not as dark as my Kat Von D liner) and it doesn’t sting my eyes.¬† I would have liked the color to be a little more intense, but it’s perfect for wearing to work.¬† I wore it all day and was pretty pleased with the results!¬† The pigmentation was the same and thankfully it stayed put.¬† It also came off easily with a makeup remover wipe.

image

Overall, I’d give this product an….8/10. It definitely wins in price and I really like the felt-tip.¬† Yay for easy and quick application!¬† My Kat Von D liner wins in the pigmentation category, but the Physicians Formula liner’s serum is an interesting twist.¬†I think this might become my new favorite!

November 2013 Birchbox: Welcome to the Holidays!

Peppermint Mochas at Starbucks, pumpkin baked goods appearing in the office, the weather FINALLY dipping in the high 70s, HURRAY! ¬†It’s finally starting to feel like winter in Hawaii!

I definitely feel the holiday cheer with this Birchbox. ¬†This is probably my favorite box in a long long long while….(maybe all the way back to the Glam Box?)

1.  DDF Amplifying Elixir (pre-moisturizer serum)
2. TOCCA Crema de Mano Luxe (hand cream)
3. Eyeko Black Magic Mascara
4. Color Club Harlem Lights Collection Polish
5. Fatty Sundays Chocolate Covered Pretzel

Skincare, fancy hand cream, MASCARA, nail polish, and what???? ¬†Chocolate? ¬†Ridiculous, I can’t believe they sent all of those things in the same box. ¬†Score!

I’m already a fan of DDF products–they make my skin feel GREAT. ¬†Hand cream will always be welcome in my purse and MASCARA! ¬†Sweet, I love trying new mascara. ¬†What’s interesting, I think, is that the shade of the mascara isn’t black—it’s midnight blue. ¬†I’ve heard that lash definition with this brand is wonderful so I’m definitely looking forward to trying it out. ¬†The nail polish (Harlem Lights) collection consists of a series of pretty, metallic colors. ¬†Lots of silver, golds, and light bronzes with the exception of that ¬†Baldwin Blues shade. ¬†Intriguing :3

I’ve half given up with the pretzel, a little. ¬†The last time I got a wonderful chocolate treat from Birchbox, it was open and smashed into pieces (which is weird, to me, because the box was perfectly intact). ¬†If it comes in its salty sweet glory, I’ll be sure to savor every….second with it.

Hope you guys got wonderful things in your box as well!

November 2013 Naturebox

image

Snacking time! ¬†First off, let me apologize for the “dark” lighting. ¬†It’s been stormy in Hawaii!

But anywhere, this is what I got in my November Naturebox. ¬†This box is the “classic” subscription (5 items) was $20. ¬†Since its my second box, I was allowed to customize all of the items that I received except for 1, which was a surprise!

1.  Blueberry Nom Noms

image

These taste like the perfect soft, chewy cookie.¬† They’re a bit dense (not necessarily a bad thing) and the blueberry taste is really pleasant.¬†¬† I thought they were very moist!¬† The only thing is that you have to be careful to eat only one at a time—one cookie is 90 calories (and that clump in the picture is about 1/3 of a cookie).¬†¬† My bag came with four intact cookies and the clumps of a fifth.¬†

2.  Exotic Raw Fruit and Nuts Trail Mix

image

This was my surprise item and all I’ve got to say is pineapple, pineapple, pineapple! ¬†There’s a few raisins, nuts, and coconut flakes in the bag also, but I grabbed mostly pineapple.¬†¬†The pineapple and coconut¬†but a nice, tropical¬†twist on your usual trail mix without making¬†it too sweet.¬†¬†Good to try if you’re looking for something to shake up your snacking~

3.  Whole Wheat Figgy Bars

image

I grew up with Fig Newtons. ¬†My mom loooooooved these, and I’m still rather fond of them. ¬†I got blueberry bars in my last Naturebox and they were delicious, which is why I requested these (yay for healthier versions of childhood favorites!). ¬†I love these because they’re not dry at all and are rather satisfying! ¬† If anything, I wish these came in bite sized pieces as well (the package comes with 5 bars, individually wrapped).

4.  Fancy Dried Figs

image

More figs! ¬†I really liked these, they were the perfect blend of sweet but not overly so. ¬† The pieces were all pretty big and the bag was pretty full, so I’m happy. ¬†There’s not much to say about dried fruit other than….yum? ¬† I’m glad I got to try this one. ¬†Dried figs aren’t too common in the dried fruit section in grocery stores down here.¬† If anything, be careful of the stems!¬† Some of my figs still had their stems on and they¬†extremely hard¬†.

5.  Dark Chocolate Berry Trail Mix

image

To me, the best way to describe this mix is that it’s very “healthy and clean” tasting.¬†¬†¬† I feel a bit weird, saying that about a mix that includes dark chocolate, but it’s true!¬†Even the dark chocolate bits taste healthy–¬†although they’re good (and vegan), they don’t particularly have the same richness and creaminess that your typical dark chocolate pieces have.¬† I didn’t particularly care for this mix, at first, but it’s become one of my favorite items from this box.¬† Guiltless and clean snacking, oh yeah!

*as a note, my vegan dark chocolate bits were rather dry and crumbly.¬† I’m assuming this is due to the extra (EXTRA) long transit time from Naturebox-land to Hawaii, so perhaps mainland subscribers will have better luck!¬† I heard that if the bits are fresh, they’re supposed to be pretty creamy.¬† Good luck!

———-And that’s it! ¬†If you guys would like to try Naturebox, click here. ¬† So far, I’ve been enjoying my subscription. ¬†I like that I can try healthy things like trail mix and granola in small portions so I never get sick of them (aka the Curse of Costco). ¬†Happy Snacking!
