November and December Birchbox 2016

Sorry guys–I’ve haven’t been keeping up with my Birchboxes.  I’ve picked the curated box for the past two months –November (The Finishing Touch) and December (Shine On)–so there haven’t been any surprises.  These might be the last two I ever receive!  I won’t be renewing my annual subscription.  I’ll miss the fun little boxes (I mean the box itself) every month but the majority of my BBs have felt rather blah and unexciting.  The shipping also took FOREVER–I feel like I would get a notice about mailing and then it would take maybe a month or more before I received any items.  Free, quick shipping for ACEs?  Maybe last year it was okay but this year, idk (this is for ALL orders–the box, the add-ons, and/or a regular order with full-size items).  Gosh, this feels so weird because I’ve been subscribing for 5 years!

November’s box was interesting because it included the ‘They’re Real’ mascara from Benefit (which is something I’ve received multiple times from Birchbox and is something that I actually really like).  I received a good, dependable black but I wish they sent out blue or brown just for something DIFFERENT.  The Juliette has a gun fragrance was just okay but I enjoyed receiving black eyeliner because I LOVE black eyeliner, the eye cream was just alright, and that smoothing balm was nice enough as a sample but nothing that I’d fall enough in love with to buy.

December’s box is actually really nice! I say ‘is’ because I probably won’t get mine in until the end of January…oh well.  Nothing out of the ballpark but yep, definitely nice.  There was a French shampoo and conditioner, a primer with SPF15, a face cream, and one of Birchbox’s own LOC shadow sticks.

I started to feel like my love of my Birchbox subscription started to fade once they nixed all of those mini little extras–I always felt that BB put some extra care in sending something to make the boxes pop with their theme of the month.  Once it was a cookie, another time it was a set of BB printed, travel-themed postcards…now, it kind of seems like most of their money went to making the actual box itself fancier.  Don’t get me wrong, I loved the fancy boxes (Rifle Paper Co, *swoon*) but it would have been nice to see the company invest more in higher-end and/or a larger variety of samples instead.  Fancy boxes once a quarter would have been okay.  I kind of miss receiving my regular, plain brown boxes cause they were the most reusable!

I also think that before, BB was all about discovery and trying new things.  For a while, I’d get totally new brands and old brands in new shades/products (which was really fun), but then it felt like they were trying to force us all to love Harvey Prince things.  The samples didn’t seem to match anyone’s profile anymore, and when the best thing in a box was a product that you’re already received at least three times, I think it’s time to step away.

Oh Birchbox.  I’ll miss you–it was really fun while it lasted.  Breakups are hard!  😦

October 2016 Birchbox: Revive and Restore

IT IS OFFICIALLY FALL!  I’ll still be in summer clothing for a month more but my mind is ready for sweaters and boots.  I never really thought of October as a settle down and chill kind of month (I guess I automatically think about Halloween instead) but now that I think about it, settling down for a facial sounds like a really good idea.  Thanks, Birchbox.

Alrighties!  Do you guys like the box pattern this month?  It’s very fall (to me) but I’m not really digging the print–I think I’ll recycle it and use it in my Poshmark wrapping.  (GUYS I AM HOOKED ON POSHMARK)

This month, I picked the curated box.

  • This Works Deep Sleep Pillow Spray
  • Oribe Gold Lust Dry Shampoo
  • Avene Hydrating Optimale Hydrating Cream RICH
  • GLAMGLOW POWERMUD Dual Cleanse Treatment
  • MAKE Silk Cream Lipstick

I’m really excited!  Oribe and GLAMGLOW are two of my favorite beauty brands.  MAKE is growing on me and the other two sound interesting enough that I’m really excited to try them.  That Deep Sleep Spray is supposedly able to help you go to sleep faster.  Interesting! I kind of feel like this is the first time in a while that the theme of the month actually reflected in the products that they sent us.

Hope you guys got something good!

September 2016 Birchbox: Go Forth and Multitask

Go Forth and Multitask!  Just from the title, I was expecting those products like…an eyeshadow that doubles as a highlighter or a creme lip product that can also be used as a blush. (But time-saving things are good too.  ;])

Also–are you guys saving your boxes?  I tend to save mine and give gifts in them because you don’t even need wrapping paper!  Just a little twine or ribbon and you’re good to go.

First things first: That Milk Mascara!  I feel like for the past couple months, Milk products have been pushed at us more and more.  Look at that brush!  I love it already.  One of my Makeup Is Forever mascaras has a brush (not as fun at this one but) with a tapered end and it makes my inner and outer lashes look AMAZING.  The tube reminds me of the Eyeko mascara–I think I’m forever going to have product regret for giving it away while I had extensions.  I’ve heard so many people talk about it!

Other items of interest: The Unwash Bio-Cleanser which is a replacement for shampoo and conditioner.  Not sure if this’ll work very well for me because I have thinner hair–I have a feeling this will make me feel a little greasy.  I AM stoked to get that Bioderma micellar solution because these things are great and Bioderma is supposed to be one of the better ones!  Woohoo!

I’m definitely looking forward to that Oribe body wash cause c’mon, it’s Oribe.  The Lemon Rinse seems like it’ll work alright for me–I have the leave-in conditioner and it works great for days that I don’t want to put any heavier creams in my hair (the consistency is kind of liquidy).  I’m wary of the LOC pencil because the colors tend to be very very very bright and I’m a scaredy cat who prefers nudes and pinks.

Did you guys get anything fun in September?

August 2016 Birchbox: Can’t Stop Won’t Stop

I like the theme this month–eking out the last bit of summer!  In Hawaii, we’ve actually got maybe…3 months of summer left.  October is when it FINALLY starts to cool down a little–it’ll finally be appropriate to wear a SWEATER.  Leather boots might be pushing it a little but I’m determined to wear them in my office!!!

This month, Birchbox sent me:

  1. Manna Kadar Cosmetics – Day-Dream Palette
  2. REN – Flash Hydro Boost Instant Plumping Emulsion
  3. ProfilePRO – Ultra Nourishing Oil (for hair)
  4. Avene – Micellar Lotion
  5. R+CO – BADLANDS Dry Shampoo Paste

YAYYYY I’m really happy!  REN is one of my FAVORITE brands–I really like the serum products that they make.  I’ve always wanted to try an R+CO product because (selfishly, the packaging is beautiful and) I’ve only heard rave reviews  about their things.  ALSO, I’ve never tried dry shampoo as a paste.  It sounds like a messy application but I’m wondering if you get the oil-absorbing perk without the sticky feeling that I get with the sprays.  Hmm.

Also interesting is the Manna Kadar product–again, I’m assuming its a small little sample size of perhaps two colors.  I just got a Manna Kadar eyeshadow in my Serendipity by LLB (Little Lace Box) and I really liked it!  The packaging wasn’t impressive but the product blended well (with the right amount of pigmentation) and the shade that I received worked wonders for my skintone.

I’ve never heard of ProfilePRO but I always welcome a light oil to rub on my ends (both on clean hair days and to help tame down the ends on 2nd day hair) and I’ll never turn down anything micellar.  I prefer this over regular eye-makeup remover and I’ve never tried a lotion yet, all of the ones I’ve bought or received were liquids.  Very interesting!

Hope you guys got something good in your boxes!  I’m actually rather digging the fact that this box is more skincare and style oriented versus just pure makeup.  Good job, switching it up, Birchbox!

July 2016 Birchbox: Morning Routine

I consider myself a morning person but I feel like it still takes me FOREVER to get ready in the AM hours…  Will this box help speed everything up?

YESSSSSS This box is great!  I’m sure that Oribe Shampoo and Conditioner is probably a foil packet sort of set but I LOVE Oribe things.  Everyone product that I’ve tried has made my hair feel AMAZING.

I’m also really excited about the They’re Real mascara (my sample choice) because I feel like this sample works really really really well for a few weeks (then it gets a little dried out and not so great).  My lashes are on point (while this product is still ‘fresh’).  This will be my second LOC product and my first lip product of theirs so I’m interested–the eyeshadow pencil they sent me a few boxes back is actually pretty awesome.  I use it routinely, not just on those days where I have no time so I smear something on my lids real quick.  The Dr. Jart+ moisturizer also seems promising–I have a new esthetician who’s encouraging me to moisturize more (and scrub less).  I’ve been layering my moisturizers (YES even in summer!) and it’s only been two days but my skin feels a lot less greasy.  Does that make sense?

I don’t always wear perfume but I’m curious about the CLEAN brand…I always see a set on Black Friday at Sephora but I always pick grabbing another Ole Henriksen set or another LivingProof Shampoo set instead.  For everyday things (especially going to work), I think I’d favor something more neutral and well….yeah, ‘clean’ smelling.  (Face Mask seems like it’d be cool.  I’m going to put mine in the fridge and paint it on with a brush after my next round of daytime shopping.  Ala Moana, the biggest mall in Hawaii, is also the world’s biggest open-air mall! 😀  Wear your sunscreen!)

Anything good this month?  YAY can’t wait to get my samples~~~
